Wow. Example fail. When Scots *were* being oppressed by the English, the language was forbidden. Also, Scots dialect and the Gaelic language are two different things, which you’d think a sociolinguist *might* know. Even Wikipedia says Scots Gaelic is not to be confused with the Scots language/Scots English. (Which I appreciate is totally beside the point of the OP)
